RESUMO

Hollow-core optical fibers can offer broadband, single mode guidance in the UV-visible-NIR wavelength range, with the potential for low-loss, solarization-free operation, making them desirable and potentially disruptive for a wide range of applications. To achieve this requires the fabrication of fibers with <300nm anti-resonant membranes, which is technically challenging. Here we investigate the underlying fluid dynamics of the fiber fabrication process and demonstrate a new three-stage fabrication approach, capable of delivering long (∼350m) lengths of fiber with the desired thin-membranes.

Anthropogenic vectors (transfer mechanisms) can facilitate the introduction and spread of aquatic disease in marine farming regions. Preventing or interrupting pathogen transfers associated with movements of these vectors is key to ensuring productivity and profitability of aquaculture operations. However, practical methods to identify and manage vector risks are lacking. We developed a risk analysis framework to identify disease risks and management gaps associated with anthropogenic vector movements in New Zealand's main aquaculture sectors - Chinook salmon (Oncorhynchus tshawytscha), green-lipped mussels (Perna canaliculus), and Pacific oysters (Crassostrea gigas). Vectors within each sector were identified and assigned categorical risk scores for (i) movement characteristics (size, frequency, likelihood of return to sea), (ii) biological association with pathogens (entrainment potential, contribution to previous aquaculture disease outbreaks) and (iii) available best practice biosecurity methods and tools, to inform unmitigated and mitigated risk rankings. Thirty-one vectors were identified to operate within the national network and association with livestock was found to be a primary driver of vector risk rankings. Movements of live growing stock and culture substrates (e.g., mussel ropes) in shellfish farming had high-risk vector profiles that are logistically challenging to address, while vessel vectors were identified as the salmon farming sector's priority. The framework and rankings can be used to inform both research and management priorities in aquaculture and other primary production systems, including risk validation, vector roles in disease epidemiology, compliance with permit conditions, policy development, and treatment options.

We demonstrate a multi-watt, picosecond pulse duration laser source by exploiting a cascaded Raman process to the second Stokes signal at a wavelength of 2.58 µm in a methane-filled Nested Anti-Resonant Nodeless fiber from a 1 µm disk laser source. A maximum average power of 2.89 W (14.45 µJ) is produced in a 160 cm length of custom-designed and in-house fabricated fiber filled with methane at a pressure of 2 bar. The impact of gas pressure and propagation distance on the second Stokes signal power are investigated experimentally. The experimental results are simulated by solving the Generalized Nonlinear Schrodinger Equation with the experiment carefully modelled by accounting for the impacts of pressure dependent gas-light interactions along the pressure gradient of the fiber. This work offers a laser source for a variety of applications as well as expanding the modelling space to methane filled fibers including pressure gradients, and nonlinear optical activity in the presence of infrared gas absorption.

Novel fundamental notions helping in the interpretation of the complex dynamics of nonlinear systems are essential to our understanding and ability to exploit them. In this work we predict and demonstrate experimentally a fundamental property of Kerr-nonlinear media, which we name mode rejection and takes place when two intense counter-propagating beams interact in a multimode waveguide. In stark contrast to mode attraction phenomena, mode rejection leads to the selective suppression of a spatial mode in the forward beam, which is controlled via the counter-propagating backward beam. Starting from this observation we generalise the ideas of attraction and rejection in nonlinear multimode systems of arbitrary dimension, which paves the way towards a more general idea of all-optical mode control. These ideas represent universal tools to explore novel dynamics and applications in a variety of optical and non-optical nonlinear systems. Coherent beam combination in polarisation-maintaining multicore fibres is demonstrated as example.

By exploiting the excellent short-term phase stability between consecutive pulses from a free-running optical parametric oscillator frequency comb, we report the first example of hollow-core fiber-delivered heterodyne spectroscopy in the 3.1-3.8 µm wavelength range. The technique provides a means of spectroscopically interrogating a sample situated at the distal end of a fiber, with all electronics and light sources situated at the proximal end and with an inherent capability to suppress spectroscopically interfering features present in the free-space and in-fiber delivery path. Using a silica anti-resonant, hollow-core delivery fiber, we demonstrate high quality transmission and attenuated total reflectance spectroscopy of a plastic sample for fiber lengths of up to 40 m, significantly exceeding the few-meter lengths typically possible using solid-core fibers. The technique opens a route to implementing multi-species spectroscopic monitoring in remote and / or hostile industrial environments and medical applications.

OBJECTIVE: Alcohol-related liver disease (ALD) is the most common cause of liver-related ill health and liver-related deaths in the UK, and deaths from ALD have doubled in the last decade. The management of ALD requires treatment of both liver disease and alcohol use; this necessitates effective and constructive multidisciplinary working. To support this, we have developed quality standard recommendations for the management of ALD, based on evidence and consensus expert opinion, with the aim of improving patient care. DESIGN: A multidisciplinary group of experts from the British Association for the Study of the Liver and British Society of Gastroenterology ALD Special Interest Group developed the quality standards, with input from the British Liver Trust and patient representatives. RESULTS: The standards cover three broad themes: the recognition and diagnosis of people with ALD in primary care and the liver outpatient clinic; the management of acutely decompensated ALD including acute alcohol-related hepatitis and the posthospital care of people with advanced liver disease due to ALD. Draft quality standards were initially developed by smaller working groups and then an anonymous modified Delphi voting process was conducted by the entire group to assess the level of agreement with each statement. Statements were included when agreement was 85% or greater. Twenty-four quality standards were produced from this process which support best practice. From the final list of statements, a smaller number of auditable key performance indicators were selected to allow services to benchmark their practice and an audit tool provided. CONCLUSION: It is hoped that services will review their practice against these recommendations and key performance indicators and institute service development where needed to improve the care of patients with ALD.

We report the flexible on-target delivery of 800 nm wavelength, 5 GW peak power, 40 fs duration laser pulses through an evacuated and tightly coiled 10 m long hollow-core nested anti-resonant fiber by positively chirping the input pulses to compensate for the anomalous dispersion of the fiber. Near-transform-limited output pulses with high beam quality and a guided peak intensity of 3 PW/cm2 were achieved by suppressing plasma effects in the residual gas by pre-pumping the fiber with laser pulses after evacuation. This appears to cause a long-term removal of molecules from the fiber core. Identifying the fluence at the fiber core-wall interface as the damage origin, we scaled the coupled energy to 2.1 mJ using a short piece of larger-core fiber to obtain 20 GW at the fiber output. This scheme can pave the way towards the integration of anti-resonant fibers in mJ-level nonlinear optical experiments and laser-source development.

In the 1970s, and again in the 1990s, a controversy sparked at the University of Hawai'i and the surrounding community over the name of one of its campus buildings that was meant to honor Australian psychologist Stanley Porteus. Using archival evidence, this article draws on the voices of various community members to reconstruct this history. Spanning multiple decades and happening alongside other controversies such as those over race and intelligence research, as well as movements promoting Hawaiian rights and sovereignty, the case of Porteus Hall offers a unique look at the global impacts of settler-science and scientific racism. Community members touched on several complex issues of legacy, presentism, and settlement, including the meanings and consequences of racism. One of the salient points community members made was that, in addition to claims to land and lifestyle, settler-scientific figures like Porteus represented claims to knowledge over local people themselves. Presented here are potential processes of deliberation and decolonization centered on our practices of commemoration that can suggest paths to expanding psychology's epistemology and methodology. Biofouling of ships' internal seawater systems (ISS) can cause significant operational issues and is a potential transfer mechanism for marine nonindigenous species. This study used an engine room simulator and economic evaluation to quantify impacts on commercial ship performance of biofouling occlusion within various ISS nodes (sea chest, strainer, and heat exchangers). A characteristic hockey-stick relationship between occlusion and impact emerged, whereby engine room systems could tolerate up to 55% occlusion of a single node without operational impact, followed by rapid performance deterioration. The relative magnitude of impacts varied by ISS node and in response to changes in ambient seawater temperatures. System tolerance was much lower when simultaneous occlusion of multiple nodes was assessed. In economic terms, consequences included required freight rate increases of 1-26% prior to forced (automatic) slowdown of the ship and up to 82% increases if slowdown conditions were required.

RESUMO

Resolving the cause of disease (= aetiology) in aquatic organisms is a challenging but essential goal, heightened by increasing disease prevalence in a changing climate and an interconnected world of anthropogenic pathogen spread. Emerging diseases play important roles in evolutionary ecology, wildlife conservation, the seafood industry, recreation, cultural practices, and human health. As we emerge from a global pandemic of zoonotic origin, we must focus on timely diagnosis to confirm aetiology and enable response to diseases in aquatic ecosystems. Those systems' resilience, and our own sustainable use of seafood, depend on it. Synchronising traditional and recent advances in microbiology that span ecological, veterinary, and medical fields will enable definitive assignment of risk factors and causal agents for better biosecurity management and healthier aquatic ecosystems.

LAY ABSTRACT: Nearly three out of four autistic people experience mental health problems such as stress, anxiety or depression. The research already done does not guide us on how best to prevent or treat mental health problems for autistic people. Our aim was to look at the benefits and harms of different interventions on mental health outcomes in autistic people. We searched all the published randomised controlled trials (RCTs) about interventions for mental health conditions in autistic people until 17 October 2020. We also searched for RCTs that were not published in peer-reviewed journals. These were obtained from registers of clinical trials online. We then combined the information from all these trials using advanced statistical methods to analyse how good the interventions are. Seventy-one studies (3630 participants) provided information for this research. The studies reported how participants were responding to the intervention for only a short period of time. The trials did not report which interventions worked for people with intellectual disability. In people without intellectual disability, some forms of cognitive behavioural therapy and mindfulness therapy may be helpful. However, further research is necessary. Many trials used medications to target core features of autism rather than targeting mental health conditions, but these medications did not help autistic people. Until we have more evidence, treatment of mental health conditions in autistic people should follow the evidence available for non-autistic people. We plan to widely disseminate the findings to healthcare professionals through medical journals and conferences and contact other groups representing autistic people.

We demonstrate recent progress in the development of a Raman gas sensor using a single cladding ring anti-resonant hollow core micro-structured optical fiber (HC-ARF) and a low power pump source. The HC-ARF was designed specifically for low attenuation and wide bandwidth in the visible spectral region and provided low loss at both the pump wavelength (532 nm) and Stokes wavelengths up to a Raman shift of 5000 cm-1. A novel selective core pressurization scheme was also implemented to further reduce the confinement loss, improving the Raman signal enhancement by a factor of 1.9 compared to a standard fiber filling scheme. By exploiting longer lengths of fiber, direct detection of both methane and hydrogen at concentrations of 5 and 10 ppm respectively is demonstrated and a noise equivalent limit-of-detection of 0.15 ppm is calculated for methane.

We report a high-power single-mode mid-infrared (MIR) pulse delivery system via anti-resonant hollow-core fiber (HCF) with a record delivery distance of 108 m. Near-diffraction-limited MIR light was transmitted by HCFs at wavelengths of 3.12-3.58 µm using a tunable optical parametric oscillator (OPO) as the light source. The HCFs were purged beforehand with argon in order to remove or reduce loss due to parasitic gas absorption (HCl, CO2, etc.). The minimum fiber loss values were 0.05 and 0.24 dB/m at 3.4-3.6 µm and 4.5-4.6 µm, respectively, with the 4.5-4.6 µm loss figure representing, to the best of our knowledge, a new low loss record for a HCF in this spectral region. At a coupling efficiency of ∼70%, average powers of 592 mW and 133 mW were delivered through 5 m and 108 m of HCF, respectively. Assuming the 120-ps duration of the MIR pulses remained constant over the low-dispersion HCF (theoretical maximum: 0.4 ps/nm/km), the corresponding calculated peak powers were 4.9 kW and 1.1 kW.

Although deep learning holds great promise as a prognostic tool in psychiatry, a limitation of the method is that it requires large training sample sizes to achieve replicable accuracy. This is problematic for fMRI datasets as they are typically small due to the considerable time, cost, and resources necessary to obtain them. A recently developed self-supervised learning method called Mixup may help overcome this challenge. In Mixup, the learner combines pairs of training instances to produce a virtual third instance that is a linear combination of the two instances and their labels. This procedure is also well-suited to the coregistered images typically found in fMRI datasets. Here we compared performance of a task fMRI-based deep learner with Mixup vs without Mixup on predicting response to treatment in recent onset psychosis. Whole brain fMRI time series data were extracted from a cognitive control task in 82 patients with recent onset psychosis and used to predict "Improver" (n = 47) vs "Non-Improver" (n = 35) status, with Improver defined as showing a 20 % reduction in total Brief Psychiatric Rating Scale score after 1 year of treatment. Mixup significantly improved performance (accuracy without Mixup: 76.5 % [95 % CI: 75.9-77.1 %]; accuracy with Mixup: 80.1 % [95 % CI: 79.4-80.8 %]). Ablation showed the improvement was due to improvement in both Improvers and Non-Improvers. These results suggest that using Mixup may significantly improve performance and reduce overfitting of fMRI-based prognostic deep learners and may also help overcome the small sample size challenge inherent to many neuroimaging datasets.

Recent global trade disruptions, due to blockage of the Suez Canal and cascading effects of COVID-19, have altered the movement patterns of commercial ships and may increase worldwide invasions of marine non-indigenous species. Organisms settle on the hulls and underwater surfaces of vessels and can accumulate rapidly, especially when vessels remain stationary during lay-ups and delays. Once present, organisms can persist on vessels for long-periods (months to years), with the potential to release propagules and seed invasions as ships visit ports across the global transportation network. Shipborne propagules also may be released in increasing numbers during extended vessel residence times at port or anchor. Thus, the large scale of shipping disruptions, impacting thousands of vessels and geographic locations and still on-going for over two years, may elevate invasion rates in coastal ecosystems in the absence of policy and management efforts to prevent this outcome. Concerted international and national biosecurity actions, mobilizing existing frameworks and tools with due diligence, are urgently needed to address a critical gap and abate the associated invasion risks.

Pests of bivalve aquaculture are a challenging problem that can reduce productivity, profitability and sustainability. A range of pest management approaches have been developed for bivalve aquaculture, but a general absence of guiding frameworks has limited the scale and permanency of implementation. Applying principles of 'integrated pest management' (IPM) could change this paradigm to improve economic and environmental outcomes. We reviewed existing research and tools for pest management in bivalve aquaculture, with studies grouped under five pillars of IPM: pest ecology (25 studies), bioeconomic cost-benefits (4 studies), continual monitoring (17 studies), proactive prevention (32 studies) and reactive control (65 studies). This body of knowledge, along with insights from terrestrial agriculture, provide a strong foundation for developing and implementing IPM in bivalve aquaculture. For example, IPM principles have been applied by a regional collective of oyster farmers in the US Pacific Northwest to optimize pesticide application and search for other options to control problematic burrowing shrimps. However, IPM has not yet been broadly applied in aquaculture, and data gaps and barriers to implementation need to be addressed. Priorities include establishing meaningful pest-crop bioeconomic relationships for various bivalve farming systems and improving the efficacy and operational scale of treatment approaches. An IPM framework also could guide potential step-change improvements through directing selective breeding for resistance to pests, development of bespoke chemical control agents, applying emerging technologies for remote surveillance and farm management, and regional alignment of management interventions. © 2022 Society of Chemical Industry.

Deep learning (DL) is of great interest in psychiatry due its potential yet largely untapped ability to utilize multidimensional datasets (such as fMRI data) to predict clinical outcomes. Typical DL methods, however, have strong assumptions, such as large datasets and underlying model opaqueness, that are suitable for natural image prediction problems but not medical imaging. Here we describe three relatively novel DL approaches that may help accelerate its incorporation into mainstream psychiatry research and ultimately bring it into the clinic as a prognostic tool. We first introduce two methods that can reduce the amount of training data required to develop accurate models. These may prove invaluable for fMRI-based DL given the time and monetary expense required to acquire neuroimaging data. These methods are (1) transfer learning - the ability of deep learners to incorporate knowledge learned from one data source (e.g., fMRI data from one site) and apply it toward learning from a second data source (e.g., data from another site), and (2) data augmentation (via Mixup) - a self-supervised learning technique in which "virtual" instances are created. We then discuss explainable artificial intelligence (XAI), i.e., tools that reveal what features (and in what combinations) deep learners use to make decisions. XAI can be used to solve the "black box" criticism common in DL and reveal mechanisms that ultimately produce clinical outcomes. We expect these techniques to greatly enhance the applicability of DL in psychiatric research and help reveal novel mechanisms and potential pathways for therapeutic intervention in mental illness.

Currently, there is little guidance for navigating measurement challenges that threaten construct validity in replication research. To identify common challenges and ultimately strengthen replication research, we conducted a systematic review of the measures used in the 100 original and replication studies from the Reproducibility Project: Psychology (Open Science Collaboration, 2015). Results indicate that it was common for scales used in the original studies to have little or no validity evidence. Our systematic review demonstrates and corroborates evidence that issues of construct validity are sorely neglected in original and replicated research. We identify four measurement challenges replicators are likely to face: a lack of essential measurement information, a lack of validity evidence, measurement differences, and translation. Next, we offer solutions for addressing these challenges that will improve measurement practices in original and replication research. Finally, we close with a discussion of the need to develop measurement methodologies for the next generation of replication research. (PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2022 APA, all rights reserved).

Individual associations between lifestyle behaviours and mental health have been established; however, evidence on the clustering of these behaviours and the subsequent impact on mental health is limited. The purpose of this study was to examine cross-sectional and longitudinal associations between combined unhealthy lifestyle behaviours (physical activity, sitting time, sleep duration, processed meat consumption, vegetable consumption, fruit consumption, smoking status, alcohol consumption) and the development of psychological distress (measured using the Kessler Psychological Distress Scale) in a large Australian sample. Participants were 163,707 Australian adults from the 45 and Up Study. Data from baseline (2006-2009) and follow-up wave 1 (2012) were analysed using binary logistic regression. The odds of reporting high or very high psychological distress at follow-up were significantly higher for those reporting five (AOR = 2.36; 95% CI 1.41-3.97, p = 0.001) or six or more (AOR = 3.04; 95% CI 1.62-5.69, p = 0.001) unhealthy lifestyle behaviours, in comparison to those reporting no unhealthy lifestyle behaviours at baseline. These findings suggest that a holistic, multi-faceted lifestyle approach addressing multiple behaviours may be required to support and promote positive mental health and to reduce the likelihood of psychological distress.
